St. Francis High School is a non-denominational, co-educational, Independent college preparatory high school.
We are located in downtown Louisville on the corner of 3rd and Broadway, steps from the Brown Hotel and Theatre Square (the school entrance is on 3rd Street). Our building is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Enrollment: approximately130 students in grades 9 through 12.
Average class size is 11, student-to-teacher ratio is 7:1
The 36 graduates in the Class of 2009 were awarded over $1.8 million in scholarship money and are currently enrolled in schools such as George Washington University, UVA, Northwestern, Dickinson College and Earlham College.
The 34 graduates in the Class of 2008 were awarded over $1.7 million in scholarship money and attend American University, Bard College, Harvard, Bellarmine, Carleton, Kenyon, MIT, NYU, and many other outstanding schools.
9 students in the last 4 years have been named National Merit Finalists, 14 have been named Commended Students; and 2 National Achievement Finalists.
The school offers 13 AP exams, 60% of students from the class of 2008 taking AP exams scored a 4 or higher on their exams.
The St. Francis athletic program offers nine varsity sports and the opportunity for students to excel in multiple sports. We have a no-cut policy, so students who wish to participate are welcomed, and talented athletes gain four years experience at the varsity level.
We are committed to diversity of all kinds — religious, ethnic, geographic and socioeconomic. Presently, 34% of our students are minority or foreign born (the national average of minority enrollment among Independent Schools is 22%).
Currently, more than 50% of students receive need-based grants (the national average of students receiving financial aid among Independent Schools is 17%).
Faculty members are passionate about their subjects, devoted to teenagers, caring, and accessible. 25% of our faculty hold doctorate degrees.
Ease of access is a benefit of St. Francis. Located along major TARC routes (www.ridetarc.org) , many of our students take public transportation from all over the county and beyond. Students and parents also drive to St. Francis, most participating in carpools.
St. Francis High School was founded in 1976, as an extension of St. Francis School in Goshen, Kentucky (www.stfrancisschool.org). Tom Pike served as Head of St. Francis High School for 26 years until his retirement in 2003. St. Francis is currently led by its second Head, Alexandra Schreiber Thurstone, an alumna from the Class of 1984.
