“Sailing in the Wake of Our Ancestors”
The Year I curriculum is an exploration of the self in the context of community. Students apply theories about leadership during the challenges of an ocean-going voyage. They learn to actually sail a tall ship, and there are sessions on world faith traditions, communications, and conflict management. Each student will prepare and present a Leader Learning Plans (LLP) which helps them transfer the learning back to his or her school. YLI speakers and presenters introduce concepts such as the collaborative leadership model, religious pluralism, and systemic injustice. Students will be invited to conduct research on religious diversity that can be published on Harvard’s Pluralism Project website. Studying the history of Amistad, students learn about the many who have traveled before them. Everywhere in the world, the struggle against oppression and ignorance requires patience, intelligence and courage. An essential question of Year I: “Who am I in a multicultural context?” |
